| Rajiv Jalan, MD, PhD The UCL Institute of Hepatology University College London London, United Kingdom I am a Senior Lecturer in Hepatology at the Institute of Hepatology, University College London. My main clinical interest is in Liver Failure. The objective of my research group is to try and understand the molecular mechanisms involved in multiorgan dysfunction of liver failure. The central hypothesis is that the endorgan injury in liver disease is due to the synergistic effect of metabolic and vascular dysfunction, which generates a vicious cycle resulting in organ failure. The basis of ongoing liver injury and that of other organs is the result of a critical interplay between the subliminal endotoxaemia and consequent induction of free radicals, nitric oxide and cytokines which then disrupt mitochondrial function and produce microvascular changes. Consequently, we are interested in novel strategies through which pathophysiological mechanisms can be targeted. |
