Andrew Lewington, MD

Dr Andrew Lewington studied medicine as an undergraduate in London before pursuing a career in renal medicine. He studied in Leicester UK and Washington University USA where he worked in Mark Hammermann's laboratory studying the molecular mechanisms underlying ischaemic acute kidney injury. He was awarded his MD with distinction for this work. Dr Lewington was appointed consultant renal physician/honorary senior lecturer at St James's University Hospital in 2004. He works as an NHS clinician specialising in the medical management of kidney transplant patients and provides a specialist renal opinion to critically ill patients on the ICU across Leeds. He was an expert adviser on the NCEPOD adding insult to injury AKI study, working from his position on the Renal Association executive committee to improve the care that patients who develop AKI receive. He is the lead author of the next Renal Association AKI clinical practice guidelines. During his time in Leeds he has developed collaborative research with an internationally recognised proteomics group. He currently has a nephrology fellow investigating potential proteomic biomarkers of kidney dysfunction in the early phase following kidney transplantation. Most recently he has been appointed as Clinical Sub Dean for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals providing him with the opportunity to oversee the quality of teaching provided to undergraduate medical students from the University of Leeds.
