QUICK BIO EMIL P. PAGANINI, MD, FACP, FRCP Professor Paganini was schooled in Europe at the University of Bologna, in Italy, the worlds oldest university founded in the early 900s. He completed his Internal Medicine at Winthrope University Hospital where he was honored as “Best Intern” and served as Chief Medical Resident. His Nephrology training was at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he has subsequently practiced for 31 years and was the Section Head of Dialysis & Extracorporeal Therapy until his retirement on December 31, 2007. He is currently a Medical advisor for several companies. He also sits on the FDA advisory panel for Cardio-renal Drugs as well as advising in the FDA device division He has authored innumerable papers, chapters and abstracts focused on dialysis issues in both the ESRD and the ICU population is was the recipient of a number of national and international awards. He was the first to apply slow continuous ultrafiltration to ICU patients and later to those with CHF. He was also involved in phase 2-3 research with EPO, and recently in phase 1-2 of the bio-artificial kidney. Working with Dr David Humes, he holds a joint patent on several aspects of this technology, and has been involved in the development of several support systems for both AKI and CKD. More recently, he has turned his attention to predictive modeling and severity score generation with an eye toward using this data as well as biomarker development as a step toward identifying patients who might benefit from protective measures prior to renal insult, or early diagnosis and intervention.
