Dr. Schmidt-Ott practices nephrology at CharitÚ University Medical Faculty Berlin and is a principal investigator at the Max Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine, and an adjunct Assistant Professor of Columbia University, New York. He received his training as a clinician and researcher at Free University and Humboldt University of Berlin and at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York. His research is focused on molecular mechanisms of kidney development and acute kidney injury. He participated in pioneering studies on renal biomarkers and their clinical application. He received several awards for his research, including Emmy-Noether Fellowships from the German Research Foundation (2003-2005 and 2007-2012), the Ernst-Reuter Award of the Free University of Berlin for the best doctoral thesis of 2002, and the Young Investigator Award from the German Society of Hypertension (2000).
