Mark Hepokoski, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Hepokoski graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, and completed his residency training and chief residency at Brown University. He completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Hepokoski’s research interest is on inflammatory crosstalk between the lung and kidney in critical illness. His earlier work focused on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolism in lung injury due to kidney injury, specifically via mitochondrial DNA-mediated inflammation. His most recent work is focused on mechanisms of acute kidney injury due to mechanical ventilation is supported by an R01 from the NIDDK and a VA Merit Award. Dr. Hepokoski’s research has also been funded by both the American Society of Nephrology and American Thoracic Society.
