7:00am Conference and Workshop Registration Open
8:00-5:30 PW1 Changing Paradigms in Acute Kidney Injury:
From Mechanisms to Management

sponsored by:
The UAB-UCSD O’Brien Core Center for
Kidney Injury Research
Conference registration is not required to attend this elective workshop. Acute Kidney Injury is a rapidly evolving area where several advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms and pathways of AKI and its effects on other organs. Recent identification of biomarkers has provided new tools and techniques to characterize this disorder, This pre-course workshop will provide a comprehensive review of the most recent developments in the field and describe emerging knowledge from basic and translational research. Results from clinical trials will be discussed to define the best strategies for effective management of patients and define the criteria for future studies.

Critically ill Patients require frequent assessments and monitoring of hemodynamic and respiratory parameters to optimize stability and guide ventilator support. Several techniques are now available and utilized to manage patients including devices to assess the microcirculation, volume responsiveness and cardiac performance. This workshop will cover the principles and strategies for hemodynamic and microcirculatory monitoring and ventilator management in critically ill patients.

CCUS or critical care ultrasonography is a Ultrasonography examination performed and interpreted by intensivist at the bedside, to establish the diagnosis and guides procedures, locate a target organ or a disease specific condition. It serves as a complement to CXR,CT,MRI, Echo, or other imaging modalities. This introductory CCUS workshop is a four hour workshop that includes one hour introductory lecture, one hour reviewing normal and abnormal images, and two hours hands on session. The components of this workshop are: abdominal (kidney, bladder, IVC and aorta); thoracic( lung and pleural space); vascular (vascular access and DVT).
