8:00-5:30 PW1 Changing Paradigms in Acute Kidney Injury:
From Mechanisms to Management

sponsored by:
The UAB-UCSD O'Brien Core Center for
Kidney Injury Research
Acute Kidney Injury is a rapidly evolving area where several advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms and pathways of AKI and its effects on other organs. Recent identification of biomarkers has provided new tools and techniques to characterize this disorder. This pre-course workshop will provide a comprehensive review of the most recent developments in the field and describe emerging knowledge from basic and translational research. Results from clinical trials will be discussed to define the best strategies for effective management of patients and define the criteria for future studies.
CRRT Conference registration is not required to attend this symposium, separate registration is available.

Advances in the Diagnosis and Management of Systemic and Progressive Thrombotic Microangiopathies (TMA's)
Systemic TMA is a process of widespread thrombi and inflammation in the small blood vessels of vital organs throughout the body. The multiple thrombi and inflammation occurs throughout the body, affecting the brain, kidneys, heart, organs of the gastrointestinal system, and lungs. The clinical presentation of aHUS can have significant clinical overlap (signs and symptoms) with other diseases, some of which are caused by systemic TMA such as TTP and STEC-HUS.

Endotoxemia is Related to Sepsis, Sepsis is Related to AKI, ergo...Endotoxemia is Related to AKI?
Using the Endotoxin Activity Assay, there is renewed evidence that endotoxemia is a major mediator of sepsis (1). Likewise, septic AKI has been shown to impart a significantly higher mortality risk than non-septic AKI (2). The EUPHAS trial provided evidence that removal of endotoxin results in improved kidney function(3) and the proposed mechanisms of injury have been described by Ranieri et al (4). Can it be deduced that endotoxemia is related to AKI and that its removal and subsequent renal function improvements are related to improved mortality? Stay tuned, the EUPHRATES trial intends to provide the answer.
